To achieve broad spectrum sun protection, a chemical-only sunscreen must contain avobenzone and at least one other chemical UV filter. Avobenzone is the only chemical UV filter that is able to absorb and protect skin against UVA rays that has been approved for use in the US. The majority of chemical filters approved by the FDA are only capable of absorbing and protecting against UVB rays. Each chemical filter absorbs a different range of wavelengths across the UV spectrum).
